Still at Staniel Cay...
No wonder it’s been a rather ‘off’ day- it’s Friday the 13th! We went to Matt and Karie’s boat after
breakfast this morning, to trade pics with one another off of our laptops.
After
that, it was nearly noon, and we had ordered bread from Rhonda’s yesterday that
we needed to pick up, so we all dinked to town.
The guys set off for the dump to get rid of our trash, and we went in
search of groceries. Only one loaf of
bread was done, and the others were in the oven, so we decided to walk to the
Isle General Store.
Karie went up the mast to check out their antennae and
such. Matt’s been concerned about his
ability to transmit over VHF. Didn’t
really find anything amiss, but she got some good pics of the harbor up there!
We passed the ‘airport’… see the sign to Keep Off the
Runway, and the fancy terminal where you wait.
Complete with a pay phone to call your buddy on his golf cart to come
pick you up!
We
walked to ‘Vivienne’s’, the owner of the grocery store, but she was closed for
lunch. She was supposed to reopen at
1:30pm, so we decided to wait. We should
have known better- everyone here is on island time. We could hear the TV playing upstairs- I
think Vivienne was watching her soaps and taking a nap on her lunch hour (and a
half).
And
then the rains came…. and it flat poured.
Matt and Karie did not have their rain catcher out to refill their
tanks, and we left every hatch and window open on Marquesa. Two Aussie families and their children were
huddled under the leaky porch as well.
We ended up riding back to the Yacht Club in a pick up truck, where the
boys were clearly concerned for our welfare- Not! They were on their second drink and had lunch
without us. We, on the other hand,
busted into our cinnamon bread while we waited for the grocery store that never
opened.
After
Karie and I had lunch, those two left.
Donnie went back to the grocery, and only came back with two green
peppers. I had forgotten to give him the
postcards I have been carrying for two weeks.
Geesh. I attempted to load the
blogs, but pictures weren’t uploaded, so I posted as it was. When we finally got back to the boat between
rainstorms, we found Marquesa in a mess.
EVERYTHING was soaked- rugs and all, standing puddles on the floor. Note to self- close all hatches and windows,
if you plan to leave- even if it looks like blue sky.
Nothing like having everything you own out on the lifelines
and hanging from the boom.
Even the mattress
pads were soaked. Loveliness...
We were invited to Pam and Stephen’s on Tide’s In for drinks and snacks at 5:00pm. Maya (Kim and Steve) from Banana Bay were also there. We had a lot of laughs and it was good to visit with others. Nothing we could do about our mess, really, but wait for it all to dry out.
So, it’s now 8pm, and we have made up a ‘bed’ on each of the
settee’s in the salon. Everything is
still too damp to make up the bed, so nothing left to do, but to call it a
night. Time to start a new book, and
maybe have a bedtime snack. I guess we did miss dinner, afterall. I wonder what
tomorrow will bring? G’nite y’all.
